Instructor Profile: Richard Freis, Ph.D.
Richard Freis,
Professor of Classical Studies at Millsaps
College, works within an integral framework to
shape personal and organizational development.
He is a member of three integral communities,
Integral University, Spiral Dynamics Integral,
and Leadership University. “My life has brought
me,” he says, “to work across the spectrum of
body, mind, and spirit. I work with the body as
a Qigong and EFT energy healer, with the mind as
an integral educator and leadership development
coach, and with the spirit as a spiritual
director and retreat leader and as a Benedictine
Oblate, a lay member attached to the community
of Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, Alabama.
Of course, the elements of this spectrum all
coexist in and with each other.”
Richard’s concern with development extends to
development in groups and communities. In May
2004, he was recognized by Mississippi Governor,
Haley Barbour, for his role as founding member
and first president of the prestigious USA
International Ballet Competition, which became a
member of a four-year cycle then embracing
Moscow, Varna, Bulgaria, Tokyo, and the new
site,
Jackson, MS. “Almost nobody thought we could
pull it off,” he says. “But it still thrives
after twenty-five years and many Jackson medal
winners have gone on to major international
careers. Also many of the innovations we
established have been taken up by other
Competitions.”
